NHS Trust achieves IITT gold accreditation

South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust has notched up a first by becoming the first NHS Trust to achieve Gold Standard Accreditation from the Institute of IT Training.

The SWYMHT Health Informatics Training Service provides training to mental health and primary care staff, service users and carers across the Wakefield health community. Delivering training in desktop IT software, local clinical information systems and the electronic evidence-base, the service comprises 5 training staff and a service manager and is an accredited ECDL provider. The team delivered 2700 training contacts during 2002/3, all provided free at the point of use to delegates.

The team knew that it was delivering a high volume service but was eager to show that the service was value for money by proving that the service was also of a high quality, was continually improving and meeting the changing needs of its customers. To do this the service embarked on a series of projects, one of which was to gain accreditation from an industry-recognised external body, for which the team chose the Institute of IT Training (IITT). Initial accreditation was awarded in April 2003.

Concurrently, the service put all its trainers through the IITT's Trainer Assessment Programme. The effort invested by all the staff within the service has culminated in the first NHS team to be awarded Gold Accreditation status.

Vicky Harris, Health Informatics Training Manager said: "It's really important to us that we keep improving the quality of the training service and that we gain recognition for all the hard work that the team do. The IITT has helped us to focus on specific areas for improvement and has given the trainers individual accreditation for their training competency. Of course I am delighted that we are the first NHS organisation to achieve the Gold Accreditation which is testament to the commitment of the team."
