A new initial screening and assessment tool, which is free to employers, has been developed by GoSkills, the Sector Skills Council for passenger transport, in partnership with employers in the sector and the Department for Education and Skills. In addition, to support trainers using the resource, GoSkills has provided guidance materials that it says will also be available free of charge to employers, training providers and other interested parties such as other Sector Skills Councils. GoSkills said the resource has been designed specifically to meet the needs of employers in road passenger transport and that all aspects of the assessment process reflect real situations in the bus, coach, taxi, private hire and community transport contexts. The Sector Skills Council added that employers have been involved throughout the development process, contributing to the writing of the materials to be used with learners. The trial phase for the new assessment tool was formally launched recently in the South West and the East Midlands. The events were attended by over 150 delegates from industry including employers, union learning representatives and trainers. GoSkills said ten employers have already committed to participating in the trial and it is anticipated that over 1,000 individuals will take part. Speaking at the East Midlands' launch event, Peter Huntington, chief executive of GoSkills, said: "I am delighted that we are able to provide resources designed by the industry for the industry. "Literacy, numeracy and communication skills are high priorities for the sector, not just to aid business effectiveness but also to support individuals in their personal development. "GoSkills is committed to ensuring that employers have a full package of resources available to them that are relevant and fit for purpose."
