The Biotechnology Skills Matrix has been launched by BioApproaches South West - a biotechnology support group funded by the South West of England Regional Development Agency and managed by Great Western Enterprise - in conjunction with SEMTA (Science, Engineering, Manufacturing Technologies Alliance), the Sector Skills Council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies. Dr Gagan Lushai, programme manager for BioApproaches, said: "The UK is home to world-class scientific research, particularly when it comes to biotechnology. It is therefore essential that the sector provides the very best standards of training to reflect the skills needed by employers. "The Skills Matrix offers is the first resource in the UK that offers employers an infrastructure to gauge quality standards with modules from training providers who can help them achieve these standards." John Ryalls from SEMTA said: "As a Sector Skills Council, we understand employer skill needs because they help us define these in our National Occupational Standards for the Bioscience sector. In the Skills Matrix, employers now have the link between their skills needs and national training providers, who can help develop and improve the drug discovery, drug development and clinical trials skills of their employees."
