ECDL hits the million mark
The BCS is celebrating reaching its biggest milestone yet, as one million people in the UK are now registered with the Society's European Computer Driving Licence international IT qualification.
The BCS introduced the ECDL to the UK just six years ago to spearhead the Society's IT literacy campaign to promote the importance and relevance of an IT literate nation. Now there are one million registered candidates throughout the country and ECDL is now used as the benchmark IT qualification for the NHS, the MoD, HSBC, IBM and many local authorities and educational establishments.
Pete Bayley, BCS qualifications director is not surprised at the qualifications' speedy take-up, "The BCS has been championing the nation's IT literacy programme for some time now and this news represents a significant achievement for us and one which signifies the public's awareness of the increased importance of IT competency. However, there is no room for complacency, we are still a long way off ensuring everyone has a qualified and competent understanding of computing, but as the number of ECDL passes increases each week and with an increasing number of employers demanding IT literacy, specifically ECDL, we are confident we will meet this aim."
Official celebrations of the achievement were held at the 2004 ECDL National Forum at G-Mex in Manchester where Wilf Voss, ECDL marketing and product development manager, showcased the latest qualification offerings from the BCS, including e-citizen and equalskills.
Both of these new qualifications are being offered to enable people to discover the basics of computing including email, the internet, creating new documents and other topics designed to show people without any prior knowledge of computers, the benefits IT can offer.
