Automotive Skills joins forces with The Institute of the Motor Industry
Automotive Skills, the sector skills council for the retail motor industry, has joined forces with The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).
The move has been welcomed by the Sector Skills Development Agency (SSDA), which supports the Skills for Business network of sector skills councils.
Simon Perryman, head of performance at the SSDA, said: "This is a very positive move for the whole industry. Businesses will benefit from a combined and strengthened portfolio of services. In particular, this development will enable significant enhancements to the skills system, giving employers the power to help shape training and qualifications that are tailored to their needs. This was a key recommendation of the recent Leitch Review of Skills, and is seen as crucial to the productivity of UK businesses and the ability of our economy to compete globally."
The combined body is located at the IMI 's headquarters near Hertford. Sarah Sillars, IMI chief executive, heads up the enlarged organisation.
Steve Nash, chairman of the IMI 's new executive board, said: "This step will lend greater synergy to the sector and will deliver a focused and dynamic approach to the skills agenda, including management and leadership, 14 to 19 year old qualifications, adult learning, careers and CPD.
"The move is actively supported and encouraged by the automotive industry across all activities and has been endorsed by stakeholders in having real benefits for the sector and its employees."
The government is expected to confirm the combined organisation as a sector skills council shortly.
