RMC to use online toolkit for competition compliance

RMC (UK) Limited, part of RMC Group plc, has purchased a licence for a customised version of Eversheds’ new e-learning product - The Competition Law Online Toolkit - to help ensure employees are equipped to comply with the strict Competition and Enterprise Acts.

The Enterprise Act, which could see directors disqualified for up to 15 years if their company breaches either UK or EU competition law and individuals involved in cartels going to prison for up to 5 years, came in last June.

Michael Collins, head of legal and company secretary at RMC (UK), explains: "RMC has a large and dispersed workforce that needs to be trained. Historically we have used traditional classroom methods, but with up to 600 affected employees this is not always easy - people can be away and new starters may miss out.

"The Toolkit addresses these problems because it can be rolled out any time to anyone. A further significant benefit is that it will enable us to monitor employees' progress through the course and importantly evaluate their understanding. It is very difficult to achieve this efficiently in any other way. The Toolkit is also an extremely cost effective solution for our training needs."

Julia Woodward-Carlton, competition lawyer at Eversheds, said, "Compliance manuals are often too long, turgid and not relevant to the issues facing the employee. People need something more engaging. There is a huge education process that needs to be undertaken to ensure every level of an organisation is completely au fait with the ramifications of the Enterprise Act. There has been a lot of focus on directors and their personal liability, but compliance is necessary for everyone. Employees, HR professionals and even union representatives need to be considered when undertaking a review of how to implement a policy which reflects the company’s stance."

Michael Collins concludes: "RMC believes a compliant business is a better business. The Toolkit is an extremely good way of tackling the training issue."
