Awards celebrate record year of achievement

A record year of learners completing training programmes at Powys Training's successful Newtown centre was celebrated when Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik presented the annual awards.

A total of 75 learners have achieved qualifications ranging from Modern Skills Diplomas in management and Modern Apprenticeships in tyre fitting, plumbing and care to Diplomas in Internet Technology and Vocational Enhancement Programme certificates.

The learning programmes are either supported by training and lifelong learning organisation ELWa or the Employment Service.

"Powys Training has achieved something unique," said Mr Opik. "Their award ceremony brought together people at different stages in different subjects and of different ages to celebrate one common achievement - their choice to give themselves new skills and new opportunities.

"The sense of achievement just filled the room. It was a time for the students to be proud. Powys Training deserved all the applause they got for enabling this to happen."

David Birch, Powys Training's Newtown centre manager, thanked ELWa and the Employment Service for supporting a record year of achievement by learners at the centre.

He was delighted that Newtown had been recognised for the second year as the most successful of Powys Training's network of six centres across Powys and the border.

He welcomed the greater flexibility in training programmes for learners over the age of 25 years, which had resulted in more people gaining qualifications in the workplace in the past year.

Learners had received qualifications in management, care, IT, plumbing, carpentry and joinery and tyre fitting, while others had built their confidence and gained Key Skills to return to work after periods of unemployment.
