Plans for National Logistics Academy announced

Skills for Logistics, the Sector Skills Council for the freight logistics industries, has announced plans to develop the National Logistics Academy - an industry specific academy that aims to provide a focus for skills development and training within logistics.

It is set to be one of a network of 12 sector specific academies in place by 2008, each academy set up to provide vocational education and training for young people and adults.

Ian Hetherington, chief executive of Skills for Logistics, said "The academy will ensure that UK logistics maintains its competitiveness in a global economy by developing the workforce in a way that is relevant to industry needs.

"All the training programmes will be developed in association with employers, their requirements will be at the forefront of educating logistics employees, ensuring that businesses and the FE sector are closely aligned for the development of qualifications at all levels from new entrants to senior management."

"The academy will assist in tackling skills gaps and shortages and will help to encourage more people into this exciting and essential industry!"

The aim of the National Logistics Academy is to provide logistics employees with access to training and skills development opportunities required to meet current and future skills demands within the industry. Funding will come from both private and public sectors.

Skills for Logistics plans to supplement the National Academy with a Regional Logistics Academy in each English region. Each Regional Logistics Academy will adopt the national requirements and adapt them to meet the particular strategic and business needs of that region.
