CIPS launches new Public Sector Faculty

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS) formalised an agreement last month to launch its new Public Sector Faculty - an educational networking group for public sector procurement professionals.

The Public Sector Faculty is sponsored by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC).

Ken James, chief executive of CIPS and Martin Sykes, executive director of smarter procurement at the OGC and head of profession, signed the agreement at the CIPS Premier Conference 2006 at the Victoria Park Plaza in London.

CIPS says the Public Sector Faculty will offer members their own section of the CIPS website, access to a tailored continuous professional development programme, a quarterly newsletter, specialist training events and access to procurement job vacancies.

As part of its new qualifications strategy, CIPS says it is working with a range of stakeholders to develop specialist units aimed at those procurement professionals working in the public sector.

Ken James said: "Public sector procurement is in the spotlight - and it has to perform. The Efficiency Review has presented the procurement profession with an opportunity to really excel and demonstrate its strategic capabilities.

"The Public Sector Faculty is about improving capability and it will offer the public sector procurement community a clear way to develop its skills and work and learn together."

Martin Sykes said: "OGC is delighted to sponsor the creation of the Public Sector Faculty and the development of public sector specific examination units within the CIPS Qualification Ladder.

"Whilst Central Government members will join first, our intention is that all public sector procurement people will join to form a collaborative network and to share best practice. We all face the efficiency challenge, which includes getting value from smarter procurement. This is something for all."
